Initial Notification: U.S. Navy SUPSALV has contacted the NOAA SSC for the Pacific Islands to request trajectory support in the event of an oil release during planned operations on the sunken Ex-USS PRINZ EUGEN in Kwajalein Atoll, Republic of the Marshall Islands. The 700-foot German heavy cruiser sank in December 1946 but still contains fuel oil. The NOAA ERD Scientific Support Team is putting together information on the likely oil trajectory in the event of a release, as well as information on chemistry and expected persistence of Navy Special Fuel Oil .
