Initial Notification: Early on the morning of 5 December 2009, USCG Sector New Orleans notified the regional NOAA Scientific Support Coordinator of a Sulfur Dioxide release at a refinery located S of New Orleans, LA. The cause of the release was a sulfur recovery unit failure. The specifics leading to the cause have yet to be determined. The facility was able to immediately secure the discharge.
