Initial Notification: U.S. Coast Sector Honolulu called the SSC the night of March 28 to ask for guidance in handling a very corroded compressed gas cylinder that washed ashore at Lydgate State Park on the eastern side of the island of Kauai, Hawaii. After consulting with NOAA environmental chemist Dr. Jim Farr, the NOAA SSC provided phone support regarding potential responder and public safety risks associated with various removal and disposal options under consideration for the cylinder.
