Initial Notification: On the afternoon of 2 March 2008, USCG Sector Mobile notified the regional NOAA Scientific Support Coordinator of a HAZMAT release at the Chevron Refinery in Pascagoula, MS. An equipment failure resulted in a plant shut in and the release of 500 lbs of sulfur dioxide. The facility was restarted, and there was no report of injury by the USCG. Since the event had already occurred, and the gas had reportedly dissipated, this report served only as a notification only. There was no threat to the coastal marine environment.
