Initial Notification: During May and June of 2000, Coast Guard Group Eastern Shore received a number of reports of "large quantities" of garbage off of the Easter Shore of Virginia and Maryland. All of the reports, from fishing vessel Masters, passengers, and Coast Guard boat crews described a considerable quantity of garbage, miles in length, of assorted plastics and debris - garbage. Despite considerable time and effort spent in viewing the material in the water and of Coast Guard boat crews and fishing vessel crews and passengers collecting some portion of this material in order to determine its source, no source had been discovered.
