Initial Notification: On March 4, 1999, a bulk freighter, the M/V Hollandic Confidence, was in danger of sinking 30 miles west of Cape Mendicino, California. The ship started taking on water in her forward No. 1 cargo hold when the hatch cover was ripped open in a severe storm on Wednesday, March 3. The ship was transporting 17,135 metric tons of sulfur in four holds. In her fuel tanks were approximately 169,000 gallons of IFO and 23,000 gallons of marine grade fuel oil. The vessel steamed to San Francisco Bay with two USCG vessel escorts without losing any product. The USCG sent a helicopter and two vessels on-scene and the response lasted approximately 1 week.
