Initial Notification: On October.29, 1998, a crewman welding aboard the 557-foot tank ship Champion Trader triggered an explosion in the #7 port-side cargo tank. The explosion tore a 40 x 30-foot hole in the side of the ship. The explosion killed one crew member and injured four others and caused the release of approximately 3000 gallons of IFO 380 and 3,100 barrels of palm kernel oil, stearin. USCG district 8.
