Initial Notification: About 2300 hours on June 22, 1998, the F/V Juan Gabriel and the F/V Gulf Island collided in the area of York Spit channel near the Hampton Roads Bridge/Tunnel. The F/V Juan Gabriel, potentially carrying 11,000 gallons of diesel fuel, was sunk and her crew rescued by the Gulf Island. During the rescue, there were reports of the smell of oil in the area. On the morning of June 23, heavy fog with visibility less than 1/2 mile made it impossible to see oil on the water surface. USCG district 5. Keyword: salvage.
