Initial Notification: Waste Oil Spill - Wilmington, NC - Initial Report received from Gary Ott at 0820 PST - - Location:- On Cape Fear River near intersection w/ Brunswick River. Refer to NOAA Chart #11537. Facility where release occurred is located at end of railroad indicated in the NW (upper left) of the chart near the town of Navassa. - - Spill reportedly occurred sometime Tuesday or Wednesday when a truck driver left the vehicle unattended. Upon return found the hose on the ground resulting in a waste oil release estimated at 1,500 - 5,000 gallons. - - Approx. 3 mile stretch of Cape Fear River has been impacted. A cypress marsh in this area has been impacted as well. A priority issue is to determine how best to clean up the cypress marsh. The impacted area is a State-designated primary nursery. USCG district 5.
