Initial Notification: The waste oil flowed through a cypress swamp, contaminating an area estimated at 500 by 1000 feet, before entering the Cape Fear River. The oil released was estimated to have a range from 3000 to 5000 gallons. The actual amount of waste oil spilled was not confirmed. The evening of November 15, 2600 gallons of waste oil was recovered. A 6- to 8-mile stretch of vegetation on the Cape Fear River north of Wilmington was impacted with a coating of waste oil.
