Initial Notification: On the evening of August 18, 1997, a 2,000-gallon tank of asphalt emulsion was being unloaded from a barge at the Haines, Alaska dock when approximately 1,000 gallons of the material spilled into the water just off the dock face. The release received considerable local press coverage that often emphasized its alleged negative impacts. The spill's actual impact was minimal. Throughout the incident the weather was mild.
