Initial Notification: On Sunday, November 27, 1994, the tank barge, A 410, grounded north of Bois Blanc Island in the Straits of Mackinac in Lake Huron. The 335-foot, double skinned barge, built in 1955, contained 41,000 barrels of heated asphalt in five separate tanks. The asphalt was heated to 245?F. The first opportunity to transfer the cargo was Tuesday, November 29 because the weather was deteriorating with gale warnings; Monday, November 28 winds were forecast to be westerly at 30 to 40 knots. The asphalt was transferred on December 1 and 2 into another barge without a release of product. USCG district 9. Keyword: potential spill.
