Unocal Neches River; Port Arthur, TX

Initial Notification: Approximately 1,000 barrels of crude spilled from the Unocal facility located on the Neches River sometime during the night of April 19-20, 1993. It is speculated that the spill might have originated at a sump. The specific gravity of the oil is between .75 and .90, the oil is being referred to as "rock oil". Most of the oil appears to be in Gray's Bayou, some has been reported 3 to 4 miles down the Neches River (from the spill site). The Unocal facility is located at 30 degrees, 00 minutes, 06 seconds North, 93 degrees, 58 minutes, 04 seconds West. NOAA SSC Mike Barnhill is on scene. Charlie Henry from LSU and members of the BAT team are planning to go on scene. USCG district 8.
