Nuka Bay, East Arm, SW corner of Kenai Fjords National Park, Alaska | 1992-Aug-28

Initial Notification: On August 27, 1992, the fishing vessel Loon struck a submerged object near Naked Island in Prince William Sound, Alaska. Several hours after the collision, the vessel sank off the Kenai Fjords National Park in about 600 feet of water with 1,500 gallons of diesel on board. The oil was released from the sunken vessel's position during the next 24 hours, but north to northeast winds 10 to 25 knots carried it south and away from any shorelines. At times the slick was about 5 miles long and 100 yards wide. The crew of the Loon, suffering from severe hypothermia, was rescued by a U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) helicopter. The USCG and the National Park Service each flew over the incident on two separate occasions. The last overflight was flown on August 31, 1992. USCG district 17. Keyword: none.
