Initial Notification: The container vessel Evergrace, on her way to Baltimore from Houston with a cargo of allyl alcohol was rerouted to the Port of Hampton Roads after ship personnel noticed a mustard-like odor near the #1 hatch portside during a general inspection. The Evergrace was carrying 57,670 kilograms (127,139 pounds) of allyl alcohol in three 20-foot containers and a 20-ton intermodal tank container. The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) Marine Safety Office (MSO) Baltimore was notified of a possible leak on January 24, 1992. At the Port of Hampton Roads, a risk assessment was conducted to ascertain whether the vessel was safe to dock. After the vessel was allowed to dock, the suspect containers were carefully removed to a secure shoreside inspection area. Close inspection revealed no obvious leak or spill. USCG district 5.
