Initial Notification: On the morning of August 13, 1991, while fishing the waters around the western Aleutians, the fishing vessel GREENHOPE became unstable due to its heavy catch. To compensate for this lack of stability, the skipper decided to dump fuel and proceeded to pump about 3,000 gallons of diesel over the side into the ocean. At the time the vessel was approximately 20 miles north of Atka Island. USCG district 17.
