Initial Notification: On March 14, 1991, the fishing vessel SHINNECOCK I pulled up a World War II 22-foot MK15 torpedo in its trawling nets. The torpedo, containing a 1,200-pound warhead, became wedged in the deck of the vessel. The vessel, with 100,000 gallons of diesel oil onboard, anchored about 2 miles off Long Island and evacuated all personnel. The U.S. Coast Guard established a 3-1/2 mile security zone around the SHINNECOCK I and contacted the U.S. Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Team. USCG district 1.
