Initial Notification: On November 19, 1990, storm-induced 25-foot high waves tore open bulk fuel tanks at the village of Diomede on the north end of Little Diomede Island in the middle of the Bering Strait. Four mobile fuel oil storage tanks were damaged and began leaking oil after being swept from the rocky shore of the island. Three of the tanks contained an estimated 30,000 gallons of #1 heating oil and the fourth tank contained an estimated 4,000 gallons of marine gas. An estimated 10,100 gallons of #1 fuel oil and 4,600 gallons of marine gas were lost. USCG district 17.
