Initial Notification: Sometime on the morning of 18 July, the Barge Interstate 53 was holed below the waterline as it was being pulled away from the Exxon pier near Elizabeth, NJ in Arthur Kill. Initial information was provided by NOAA SSC Ed Levine who was on-scene at the time of the accident. Approximately 39,000 gallons of number 2 heating oil are in the water and the leak has not yet been contained. 262,000 gallons are in the damaged tank.
