Initial Notification: At approximately 2142 on September 13, 1989, the tank barge MORANIA 440 grounded on a steep embankment of rocks just north of the Triboro Bridge at Hell's Gate, in the East River. The barge, under tow by the tug EAST COAST, was carrying about 3.8 million gallons of unleaded gasoline from New Jersey to a terminal in New Haven, Connecticut. An investigation of the hull revealed a hole measuring 6-feet long by 1 to 2-feet wide, through which 108,405 gallons of gasoline had leaked. USCG district 1.
