Initial Notification: On August 23, 1989, a metal turnings fire ignited in the number 4 hold of the M/V ARTEMIS, releasing heavy steam from the forward side of the hold. By August 25, the fire had spread to the number 3 hold; by August 26, hot spots in the number 1 hold had also ignited. Electrical wiring and switchboards in the mast house above the common bulkhead between number 3 and 4 holds suffered severe heat damage. The fire had to be extinguished, the cargo removed and dried, and the water that used to cool the vessel and quench the fire had to be removed from the vessel. USCG district 1.
