Initial Notification: On May 1, 1989, the Gulf Canada tanker SCURRY, carrying 55,000 tons of carbon black feedstock, ran aground northwest of the Detroit River Light in the Canadian portion of Lake Erie while attempting to enter the Detroit River. Because the Gulf Canada vessel was grounded in Canadian waters, the Canadian Coast Guard was the lead agency. The U.S. Coast Guard Captain of the Port, Detroit, monitored the incident.
