Initial Notification: On March 3, 1989, the U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Office (MSO), Miami, received a report of an oil slick approximately 10 miles east-southeast of Islamorada, Florida. Subsequently, Coast Guard boats and aircraft and Florida Department of Natural Resources rangers observed patches of tar balls and seaweed scattered two to six miles offshore off Key Largo, southwest along the Florida Keys. Reports of shoreline impacts were also received from the Lower Keys. Oil concentrations were small and the oil appeared to be a weathered heavy oil. USCG district 7.
