Initial Notification: At about midnight on September 7, 1988, an Apex Towing Company barge grounded at mile marker 342 on the Mississippi River, approximately 140 miles north of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The barge was loaded with 22,000 barrels of styrene liquid; an estimated 5,000 barrels were spilled. Observers reported strong odors in the vicinity and were experiencing difficulty breathing.
