Initial Notification: On August 5, 1988, the U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Office (MSO) in Providence, Rhode Island received a report from the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) that a tank truck containing 6,000 gallons of vegetable oil had turned over on an exit ramp north of Providence on Interstate 95. The DEM and fire department were on scene. Rhode Island DEM reported that the spill had totaled approximately 6,000 gallons of vegetable oil. An unknown volume of this material entered a tributary to Narragansett Bay. USCG district 1.
