Initial Notification: On Sunday March 6, 1988, the U.S. Coast Guard Captain of the Port (COTP), Detroit, was notified of an oil slick in Frenchman's Creek on Grosse Ile, Michigan. Coast Guard investigators responded and activated a contractor to remove approximately 100 gallons of oil and place booms at strategic locations. Ice covering the creek and winds counter to the normal flow made source identification difficult. USCG district 9.
