Cessna 172 Crash; San Mateo, California

Initial Notification: On December 11, 1986, the U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Office, Alameda, was notified that a light aircraft had crashed a short distance from the San Mateo Bridge in the combination marsh-mud-saltflat area, spilling approximately 100 gallons of aviation fuel. The California Highway Patrol, the San Mateo Fire Department, and ambulance personnel rescued the pilot from the downed aircraft. The pilot was taken to San Mateo Hospital where he reportedly was diagnosed as suffering from multiple injuries. The Coast Guard notified the California Department of Fish and Game and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. USCG district 12.
