Initial Notification: At approximately 2000 on June 6, 1986, the U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Office (MSO) in Ketchikan was notified that the M/V Vashon, a former Washington State ferry listed on the National Register of Historic Places, had run aground approximately four hours earlier at the head of Johnson Cove on Prince of Wales Island. The vessel carried 6,500 gallons of diesel in three independent steel fuel tanks, 300 gallons of diesel in a lube oil tank, ten drums of gasoline, two drums of lube oil, and one drum of kerosene. USCG district 17.
