Initial Notification: On November 7, 1985, the U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Office, Alameda, was notified that a Pan American Airlines jet had lost a chunk of its wing 100 miles offshore of California. En route to San Francisco International Airport for an emergency landing, the plane jettisoned about 30,000 gallons of JP 5 fuel over a 25-30 mile stretch approximately five miles off the coast between Santa Cruz and Half Moon Bay. USCG district 11.
