Initial Notification: At 1420 on October 21, 1985, a cloud of noxious fumes drifted from the Exxon Chemicals Division facility over industrial and urban communities in northern New Jersey. The Exxon Corporation attributed the situation to a compressor failure and a release of hydrogen sulfide fumes in a manufacturing process of lubricating oil additives. The failure resulted in a 10-minute release of the fumes through Exxon's flare. USCG district 3.
