Initial Notification: In 2005, Hurricanes Katrina and Rita littered the Louisiana coastal zone with tens of thousands of drums, cylinders, aboveground storage tanks, and other containers that contained crude oil, refined petroleum products, chemicals, and other hazardous materials. The EPA and United States Coast Guard (USCG) conducted the response action jointly in direct support to the State of Louisiana under ESF-10. NOAA was requested to provide the role of the Scientific Support Coordinator and coordinated the Environmental Unit functions for the Incident Command.
