Dielectric Spill into Mill River; East Rockaway, New York

Initial Notification: Around 8am on November 26, 2025, U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) Northeast District notified the New England Scientific Support Coordinator (SSC) of a dielectric fluid discharge in the Mill River area of East Rockaway, New York. USCG Sector Long Island Sound/Marine Safety Unit Coram was on scene. The release was estimated to be 80 gallons per hour with a potential loss of 2000 gallons. An Oil Spill Removal Organization (OSRO) was on scene utilizing hard and absorbent booms, as well as vacuum trucks and skimmers. The cable is currently running at lowest pressure to reduce the release. No assistance from NOAA has been requested.
