Initial Notification: On 7/16/2026 at approximately 0930 Eastern, USCG Sector Northern Great Lakes contacted the SSC by phone regarding a sheen observed on the St. Mary's River in Michigan near Sault Ste. Marie. The oil, source, quantity, and responsible party were not positively identified, though USCG learned of a small (5-10 gal) inadvertent discharge by a USACE facility upstream the following evening. USCG-contracted OSRO arrived on scene, though the sheen was determined to be unrecoverable. A small quantity of possible emulsified oil was observed collecting in a low flow area.
