First Marine Shipyard Waste Oil Barge, MM 11 Tennessee River; Calvert City, KY

Initial Notification: On 30 January 2024, SSC was requested by USCG Sector Ohio Valley to provide remote support for an incident involving an oil discharge from an unpermitted waste oil barge located near MM 11 on the TN River. MSU Paducah PR Team responded to conduct a preliminary investigation. Once on scene, the PR Team located a large sheen and a recoverable oil slick and began looking for the source of the discharge. Working with McCraken County EMA and utilizing a drone, the PR team was able to locate a potential source of discharge. The PR Team located T/B MM-19 at First Marine Shipyard in Calvert City, KY, and discovered that it was filled with an unknown amount of waste oil. SSC provided fate and transport information for a potential release scenario as well as resources at risk, river information, potential cleanup and monitoring strategies. Virtual support likely to continue until all waste is removed from the barge.
