Initial Notification: On January 25, 2024, the Great Lakes SSC received a report from USCG Sector Northern Great Lakes of a 1/20/24 coke liquor spill from an Algoma Steel facility in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada to the St. Mary's River. The spilled quantity and contaminant concentration levels are unknown, but the coke liquor was reportedly spilled to the site's storm drain system and may have been partially treated before release to the river through the facility's wastewater treatment system. Canadian authorities have sampled the source and outfall. Those chemical analysis results are expected within 3 weeks. USCG is requesting information on contaminant levels of concern for coke liquor.
