Initial Notification: On December 22, 2020, a BNSF train carrying Bakken crude oil derailed while en-route to the Phillips 66 refinery in Ferndale, WA. The EPA and WA Department of Ecology are responding. This incident occurred near Custer, Washington. Seven cars derailed and five caught fire. For some portion of time, Interstate 5 was shut down by the State Patrol. There was an evacuation of nearby residents. The cause of the derailment is under investigation by federal and state authorities including the FBI and the NTSB. Notification only
