Initial Notification: On July 25, 2020, the 984-foot bulk carrier M/V WAKASHIO ran aground on a coral reef off the coast of Pointe-D’Esny, Mauritius. The situation was initially reported as stable but in the past few days, the vessel has begun leaking fuel oil. The vessel is reported to have approximately 1.1 million gallons of fuel and lube oils on board, but no was not laden with cargo. On August 8, 2020, the US National Response Team and NOAA were notified via the US. Department of State, to address a formal request for assistance from the Mauritius Government. This hotline was opened to capture information regarding the incident.
