Initial Notification: On January 20, 2016, the USCG Sector New Orleans notified the NOAA SSC that approximately 15 barges in a fleeting area at River Mile 52 of the Mississippi River had broken loose from their moorings and collided with nearby vessels. One barge carrying either coal or petroleum coke sank mid-channel, and another has been pushed into the bank. Sector NOLA requested advice on fate, toxicity, and effects for these products.
