Initial Notification: On March 5, 2015, the USCG requested NOAA SSC assistance for the BNSF Train Derailment along the banks of the Mississippi River south of Galena, IL. The accident occurred in the vicinity of the confluence of the Galena River and the Mississippi River near Mississippi River Mile Marker 565.3. According to a statement from BSNF, the train has 105 cars, 103 of which were carrying crude oil.
